VANDERBILT MENTAL HEALTH REFORM
student group that meets once- or twice-a-month (as time allows) to supplement conventional mental health education; political, interdisciplinary approaches to mental health and hot topics

SYLVIA PLATH VS. MACHINE LEARNING
Background on critical suicidology. Basic premises of quantitative methods and quant supremacy (Foucault-style). Sylvia Plath is used to demonstrate the shortcomings of even “big data” approaches – her suicide is so her that only qualitative, individualized insights could ever really grasp why/how she chose to die by suicide.

TRACING EVO PSYCH
I spent too long on Twitter getting pissed off by the likes of Bret Weinstein. Worse yet, evolutionary psychology has been leveraged by the growing meninist “alpha male” movement. To that end, it might be pop psychology’s worst offender, with such advocates as Joe Rogan and Bret Weinstein. I didn’t get into the sometimes useful insights of evo psych here (they do exist), but this presentation outlines some of the worst offenses and misuse of evo psych “science”.

THE REPLICATION CRISIS
Selected issues in the replication/reproducibility crisis. Why they matter for mental health. Also includes some logistical details relevant to the org. (This is an old one…!)
TOURETTES
my own experiences, and leveraging technical expertise to lead convos incorporating both lived experience + subject matter expertise

FUZZY BOUNDARIES: UNDERSTANDING THE TOURETTE-FUNCTIONAL TIC DIVIDE
There’s been a lot of talk about “Tik Tok” tics, which arose seemingly overnight during the pandemic. This presentation focuses on the hierarchy privileging “real” tics above “functional” (TikTok) tics – what does this reveal about our own identities and reliance on neurological models?
